With winter not far off, it’s getting to that time of the year when homeowners are starting to turn on the heating to keep warm. But this can get extremely expensive if you haven’t got an adequately insulated loft to retain this heat, especially with the recent energy price increases.
To prevent the heat in your home from transferring through the roof to the outside and being wasted, you must effectively insulate your loft for the cold weather.
Different ways to insulate your loft this winter
There are multiple ways to improve the insulation levels of your loft, including; thermal loft lining and replacing your old loft hatch with one that is more energy efficient and prevents draughts. But the primary and most effective choice is ensuring you have sufficient depth loft insulation for winter.
In order to meet building regulation standards, we would advise that your insulation is laid with one layer between your joists and another layer laid lengthways across them. Current building regulations also recommend that your loft insulation thickness is between 250mm-270mm to be an adequate depth to retain heat. However, some new builds are even suggesting increasing this to 300mm.
These depths are achievable if your loft is unboarded, as the insulation can easily be laid to this depth without issue. However, if your loft is boarded, it is likely that your insulation has either been removed to allow this or, alternatively, is being squashed by the flooring and the loft contents resting on top of it. Compressed insulation will stop it from working as intended and can even lead to more detrimental issues, including dampness and mould, resulting in some hefty repair costs.
So that you can facilitate the above insulation recommendations whilst still allowing for storage, we suggest getting a specially designed raised loft boarding system. LoftZone’s StoreFloor is an award-winning system that lifts your flooring above the insulation to protect it and provide a strong, safe storage area for your belongings.
Benefits of insulating your loft this winter
Insulating your loft helps to prolong the life of your boiler by creating a more consistent living environment in your loft. This insulated eco-system will also help reduce your carbon footprint and increase your home’s energy performance rating, which could increase your property’s value.
Proper loft insulation for winter not only helps to keep your home warm in the cold months, but it will also work to keep it cooler in the summer, so it is a long-term investment that will help you all year round. As heat rises, about 25% of the heat generated in your home is lost through the roof. In this case, it is obvious why insulating your loft can be so effective at reducing this heat loss and, as a result saving you money.
This reduction of energy costs each year is even more important now amidst the energy crisis. Previously you could save up to £250 per year off your energy bills, but this is likely to be even higher now, so don’t wait, get your loft insulated today!
