Loft Insulation DIY vs Professional Loft Insulation Installers

With the booming energy bill increase back in April and more set to follow it in October and January, protecting your energy savings is now more important than ever to reduce costs and save money.

An effective way to protect your energy savings is by ensuring your home’s loft is adequately insulated to help the retention of warmth within the home, making your heating go the extra mile.

Because hot air rises, a home that is heated will have a large amount of that heat escape into the loft and out through the roof. Insulation prevents this by trapping the heat inside the home below the loft, meaning that the air you heat stays in your home for longer. As a result you do not need to heat your home as much to achieve the same temperature in your rooms, saving energy and money.

With that in mind, should you have loft insulation professionally installed, or can you just DIY it? What are the pros and cons of each, and how much will it cost you either way?

Having a professional install your loft insulation

Getting an expert loft insulation installer to help can give you the confidence that your loft will help prevent heat loss generated from your heating so it doesn’t go to waste. Loft insulation can help to save you £250 per year off your energy bills, but with recent and coming changes, this figure could likely double.

At Instaloft, we only install earthwool insulation, a type of fibreglass produced using recycled materials such as glass bottles and sand. This insulation uses ECOSE technology, consisting of only natural raw materials bonded together using a bio-based binder rather than harsh chemicals.

We install this at either 100mm, 170mm or 270mm – as recommended to meet building regulations; however, this often isn’t possible unless there is no loft boarding or you are using a raised loft boarding system. Our expert loft insulation installers will install insulation in a specific way, one layer between your joists and another layer lengthways across the joists. This means that your loft insulation will be up to building regulation standards and last indefinitely, not needing to be changed every few years.

Using a loft insulation installer like Instaloft will ensure your home is adequately insulated up to the relevant standards while making no mess, as our installers will remove any dust and packaging. We also offer to re-lay your existing insulation at no additional charge as part of our service.

If you’re interested in getting your loft insulation installed by a trained professional who has been installing loft insulation in the Midlands for many years – get in touch. Having installed insulation into thousands of lofts throughout the Midlands area, you can rest assured our team’s extensive experience ensures a high quality of work that will leave you happy and warm.

Installing loft insulation yourself

That being said, it is possible to install your loft insulation yourself, and you can save yourself some money in doing so. But it will be much more labour intensive as, firstly, you’ll have to remove the existing loft boarding, which you may not have the time, expertise or methods to do so safely and effectively.

You will also need to source the type of insulation you want to use. Without having a professional installer, you will be limited to more standard and accessible options such as blankets and rolls of insulation. Taking the time to work out the right material, size and amount you’ll need to cover the entirety of your loft space are not easy, and that’s all before you even go to actually install it.

After this, it will likely require some research on how to lay the insulation correctly to ensure it is to the correct depth and provides adequate thermal protection. On top of this, not everyone’s loft has easily accessible joists, and it can be dangerous unless you know what you’re doing.

It’s important to weigh up the pros and cons of each method to see which will suit you and your situation better. If you feel you have the time and expertise to do it yourself save yourself some money, but having a professional do so will allow you to relax and have it done for you peace of mind
